What kind of woman needs a doula?

It is a common misconception that a doula is only for the crunchy, Whole-Foods-shopping, cloth-diaper-using, placenta-eating mom. This is so wrong!

Who needs a doula then?

The first time mom

A doula will help you cope with the emotions of becoming a mother, and provide evidence-based information to help you decide your birth preferences. During labor a they will provide physical support and will remain a constant source of reassurance and encouragement.

The mom who has given birth before

For moms who have experienced labor, they already know the value of firm counter pressure or light strokes during contractions; a doula will ensure that you have exactly that throughout your labor. No two births will be the same, and they will help you process and navigate the unexpected.

The single mom

If a mom does not have a support team in place for her birth, constant support can be invaluable. A doula will remain by your side throughout the duration of labor providing both physical and emotional support. They will connect you to other resources to help build your village.

The mom with a huge support system

A doula will never replace your birth team, but can offer some respite if your partner needs to step out for a quick break. A doula will help guide your partner in how to support you more effectively in your labor.

The mom planning an unmedicated birth

A doula will discuss comfort measures and practice coping techniques with you during prenatal visits. They will be your biggest cheerleader during labor and will help you find the power within yourself to birth your baby.

The mom planning to get an epidural

A doula will provide information on the epidural procedures and other possible interventions. They can help with movement during labor to aid in baby positioning and progress, as well as help facilitate bonding and breastfeeding after delivery.

The mom with a scheduled Cesarean

A doula will walk you through what to expect of your C-section and the possible emotions to follow. They can help you plan a family centered cesarean and will provide bonding and breastfeeding support.

The mom who wants to take control of her birth

A doula is for the woman who has ever dreamed of what her birth will look like. There is little in birth that can be predicted with certainty. A doula is not a magician and cannot promise your perfect birth, but they will help ensure you are prepared for every possible scenario. Evidence is clear that constant support in labor will only lead to more positive birth outcomes. They will present you with information and support your decisions unconditionally. They will be a source of emotional encouragement and physical support. A doula will do everything she can to help you have your ideal birth.
