How to Announce You Are In Labor

This is it. Labor has begun and you know that you will soon be welcoming your sweet baby into the world. You are ready to announce to the world you are in labor! Before you post it on Facebook or call and text everyone you know, consider how sharing the news can influence your birth.

WHEN to announce you are in labor:

First, consider when you think is the best time to announce your labor has begun. Will you tell people as soon as contractions begin? Will you wait until you get to the hospital or birth center? Will you wait until closer to birth or even after? If you choose to make the announcement in the beginning, you may love having the extra support from people. However, if your labor is longer than what you (or great aunt Suzy) expects, you may find yourself overwhelmed by people asking for updates or coming to the hospital long before you are ready.

WHO to tell you are in labor:

The birth of a baby is a sacred event. It is an honor to be invited to share in the moment. When you announce your labor, you may find yourself with far more visitors than you envisioned. Who do you want to come to the hospital or your home? Make it clear to anyone you share the news with what your expectations are. If you do create a post on social media, consider adding your wishes for visitors. For example, “Baby is coming! We will keep everyone updated. Please no visitors at this time.” You do not want annoying cousin Eddie showing up while you are breathing through contractions!

Birth is unpredictable. Sometimes that means babies come really fast before visitors are able to get to you. Sometimes that means that you get to the hospital only to be sent home because you are not quite far enough. Think about who you want to share the ups and downs with. Who do you want to share in the excitement? Surround yourself with people who will be a source of encouragement. If you make these plans before labor begins, you will be sure to have a positive support team in place.
